Although we didn't get a new poster yesterday, there are a couple other new images from How to Train Your Dragon 2 that have been floating around. The one above is from The Art of How to Train Your Dragon 2, which will be available on May 6th.
I'm thinking they might have gotten a lot of shit from last week's poster (Ruffnut's description) so maybe they stopped giving J-14 the ability to leak their posters?
I wondered about that myself. I have no proof, but the timeline certainly makes it look like a distinct possibility. A new poster three weeks in a row, and then nothing following the Eret spoiler flap.
I was really hoping for thta poster yesterday.... But yeah it seems really suspicous that three weeks we get posters on Thursdays and suddenly there is none at all on this Thursday... Seems like J-14 screwed up...
Well, judging by the first movie's art book, if there are spoilers, they shouldn't be VERY major xD Though if you want to see no possible film stills or anything, I wouldn't buy it. I myself have pre-ordered the Art of How to Train your Dragon 2.
Maybe they had some sort of contract that ended in February? Like Dreamworks gave them 5 posters and told them to use them however they wanted to and J-14 decided to post 1 every week to attract visitors to the site, I only visited that place for the posters, in fact I had never heard of it before.
i have made a breakthrough you take some yak milk and you freze it at 30 degrees Fahrenheit and you have tuff cream and you can dip it in a variety of flavors such as coconut!
I would rather not know what they are doing so it does not effect what I think of the character they play. I have heard thing about the guy that plays Gandalf. Gandalf has never been the same.... :(
Hiccup is not wearing his usual new armor on the first picture, it doesn't seem to be the same at all and we can see his arms (well thats a first :P) For the other picture, Cloudjumper only has 2 wings, could they be folded in or something?
But they are all J-14 exclusives, no? Thats why they all have that big watermark before icelandiceel shops them out. Dreamworks is giving J-14 their posters to release first. If the poster really is being withheld because of that disaster they caused last week then Dreamworks is behind it, not J-14.
Oh, that could be true too. Maybe they just didn't want to release all of them within a little over a month. Though it kinda sucks, I have a strong hunch that the last poster is Eret and I was looking forward to FINALLY getting to see him for the first time next week.
Is it possible to reopen the poll since no poster was released? Even though its obviously snotlout on the next poster, seeing the numbers keep going up was cool because I never realized how many people come to this site. I wonder how high it can go.
i spy… a Timberjack, Typhoomerang, Deadly Nadder, Zippleback, Thunderdrum, Gronckle, Scauldron??? maybe a Skrill, maybe a Changewing somewhere there. and of course, Nightfury :)
i can honestly say that i am so stoked to finally see a "live" Timberjack! :D
The thumbnail for the Hiccup poster is the good, pretty HQ version but when you click it to download, it brings you to the icky-looking orangey version :/
Thx, and I blew the picture up. Behind the one in bottom left is actually a really tiny whispering death. If I had to guess I would say it be a Nightmare.
I want the Art of How to Train Your Dragon book! :D
Let's see what we have in the poster other than Hiccup and Toothless... I spot Cloudjumper, with only two wings, Zippleback (Barf and Belch?), Nightmare (Hookfang?), Gronckle (Meatlug?), Nadder (Stormfly?), Timberjack (Stokehead?), Thunderdrum (please let it be Thornado!) and... what is that long tailed dragon in a far back...?
Oh right, we don't have any new poster this week... Snotlout and Hookfang are missing from the roster...
Notice, people talking about the poster pay more attention to trying to guess what the dragons in the far back are, rather then the epicness of Toothless and Hiccup?
Um, where exactly do you see a Night Fury in that poster (other than Toothless, of course)? I don't see one, and I've yet to see anyone else mention one.
People have been saying that they see a two-winged Cloudjumper in that second poster (leftmost dragon), but I can't see it for the life of me. There's really nothing about that silhouette that screams Cloudjumper, since we can't see the head clearly, and the fact that it only has two wings makes it pretty clear to me that it isn't Cloudjumper. Why on earth would they leave two wings off, and how on earth is that silhouette recognisable as Cloudjumper?
This is Cloudjumper from the cover of an HTTYD 2 book, I don't know about you, but he looks pretty much the same as the dragon on the poster, except the two extra wings are missing.
I think you are mistaking Cloudjumper as a Nightfury, since Cloudjumper also has a tailfin like Toothless. The first time I saw Cloudjumper flying on the cover of a book of the second movie I have also mistaken it for another Nightfury (I kind of knew it wasn't since nighfuries don't have four wings xd)
Except, for, you know, two wings, the fact that the two wings that are present are in a different position (which negate the possibility of it being an edit of the picture you showed), and the fact that the picture in the main blog post is a silhouette, which makes it impossible to pick out any other details. So, apart from the fact that the picture is different in easily the most noteworthy detail of Cloudjumper's design, it's exactly the same.
Does anyone know what the difference in the typhoomerang and timber jack are? Cause no matter how I look at it I just can't seem to tell them apart. The only thing I know is that they have different abilities.
I play a game called School of Dragons, and in the game there's a whispering death. And at the end of season 1, we saw Alvin training one. If Alvin is ever revealed to be alive, would the whispering death (named groundsplitter in my game) be the dragon he rides?
The Timber Jack and the Typhoomerang are the same dragon..It only has two names because when the teens found Torch they didn't know it was a Timber Jack because he was only a baby so they gave it a new name thinking it was a different dragon.
It definitely is a Cloudjumper. It was stated somewhere that it can unfurl its other set of wings like an x-wing. Have a look at the HTTYD 2 trailer: when Valka and her dragon are first seen, only 2 wings are visible, but later when seen carrying Hiccup, the Cloudjumper has all 4 wings out. (1:07 and 1:11, respectively).
As for Toothless flying alone, it's merely concept art. It's more of just practicing to perfect the shapes, dynamics and scenery of a situation. Very little of what you see in the concept art makes it to the final film, and Toothless flying alone is guaranteed not to be one of those aspects.
Well, for one thing, Typhoomerangs have legs while Timberjacks are like snakes with wings. Also, Timberjack horns are slender, like a Monstrous Nightmare's, and Typhomerangs' are more bulky, like bull horns. Hoped this helped.
I think Cloudjumper can fly with either 2 or 4 wings. At least that's the impression Dean Deblois gave me when he said Cloudjumper has an extra pair of wings that can 'splay' to become an x wing, like the wings were first folded or something and then it extends them.
First of all, can I have a source so that I can see (or hear) the specific wording? Because I've checked (to the best of my knowledge) all the pieces of news about HTTYD 2 as they've come out, and I've yet to see any information from an official source regarding Cloudjumper, least of all DeBlois' words (of course, it has been in plenty of pictures and a bit of trailer footage, but that's different from what you're saying).
Now, it is certainly true that Cloudjumper has four wings, and it is reasonable to assume that it can use a single pair at a time. That would not, however, render the second set invisible. Dragon wings don't just mould to their sides when not in use. Rather, they would stick out enough to be noticeable (Toothless' wings are a perfect example).
1. The shot in 1:07 is not nearly good enough to get an accurate picture of Cloudjumper. Its second set of wings could easily be down a bit further, and out of sight. And frankly, I really hope that's what's going on, because otherwise the design makes no sense whatsoever. How do you make a pair of dragon wings turn invisible? Dragon wings do not work that way.
Minor, off-topic correction: Cloudjumper is not carrying Hiccup in the 1:11 shot. Cloudjumper is in the shot, but it is another dragon carrying Hiccup. Yes, completely irrelevant to this discussion
2. Facial expressions? That picture is nowhere near detailed enough or colourful enough to make out facial expressions on that background dragon. As for the outline, as I have mentioned, the four wings is the defining aspect of Cloudjumper's silhouette, and that background dragon has two. Nor, for that matter, is it even the same pose as any other picture of Cloudjumper that I have seen, in which case you could put the difference down to a simple yet bizarre edit.
3. Regarding concept art, I've typically found that when art depicts an actual scene, that scene does find its way into the movie in mostly accurate capacity. Obviously, some details would change. And honestly, I make it my policy to not put any potential stupid decision past writers, film makers, etc. I've found myself to be a lot happier in the long-term that way.
I like the concept art outfit for Hiccup way better then how he looks in the movie now. There is just way too much stuff on him, it takes away more of the Hiccup.
Or smoke breath, there might be only one. I know they travel in packs but there have never been any 'fog monsters' on Berk so it may be one stray from it's pack.
It would seem so... I tried again. There has been some phishing with my email server and somebody got tricked so all mails from that server have been spam. That's why you've been unabled to send anything. I really hope they've fixed this..
I know this is just opinion, but I disagree. The current Hiccup looks bulkier and badass - his final gear is reminiscent of something Hiccup would make, unlike the first. Also it looks much more complete, especially during flight sequences. It might look kind of weird going into battle with a T-shirt-esque vest like in the first one, rather than battle armour in the final rendition.
Or maybe he could be lured to be with Alvin, which would make it insecure for him to stay in the academy, thus needing to get him expelled, thats just a thought though :)
Again y is hiccup and snoutlout standing on Stoick's left and right? Not to menchon stormfly id behind the man! I'm curious to see were there gonna take us or if I'm gonna have to be upset with another lame episode. I expect much more comeing from the last 2 episodes.
About that thing if the dragon on the upper left in the korean poster is cloudjumper: I've played a little bit around with sharpening and upscaling tools and with color correction and puppet warp you can see, it is definetly an edited version of cloudjumper.
The reason I can think of for this would be.. often when drawing child characters your drawing style is different.. simply because the anatomy is different. Also, in the first HTTYD film they went with a very cartoon-styled way (mainly with vikings you could tell this.) You could tell by how big Hiccups eyes were, to make him look cute, and how thin his neck was. (no real human has that thin of a neck. XD) These were some subtle details that I think, in my opinion, they added to make him look like the cute, innocent, and wimpy kid he was portrayed to be.
Now we found out months ago that the new team wants a totally different animation style. Part of this, I think, is making it more realistic. So you feel like you could reach out and touch them when you are at the theatre. (this is what most movies like to go for, that feeling where you feel like you almost really were there, forgetting temporarily where you are.)
I have noticed with the animation so far they edited it to look more realistic. Plus, Hiccup just grew up. So the reason he looks so different is most likely the writers wanted to turn him into a heroic character that people could look up to.. as well as make him more realistic.
Things I have noticed...
-His eyes, yes are smaller and look more real. (in the first one his pupils being so small and his eyes so big was a noticable difference, but again I think they just did that because he was a kid and it was different animation. This way he doesn't look so child like any more.)
-His limbs are not overly skinny like the first film. (he had like really skinny arms, legs, and neck. now they seem normal for someone his age.)
-His hair is darker (and this is most likely because most peoples' hair darkens with age. I know mine did. Could just be the lighting though.)
-The animation style is just noticably different. More detailed, more smooth.. making it look less cartoony.
Thats just my opinion. Feel free to share your thoughts, or anyone else who reads this. I'd love to hear peoples thoughts on this. :)
For anybody who is interested, I have more sketches, fan fiction, and random httyd stuff on my blog. Check it out! http://httydfangirlforever.blogspot.com/
It would definitely be interesting, and it would get a lot more foggy around Berk. And I don't think Toothless would take to kindly to it, him having a metal tail.
Thank you for the source, which I do recall seeing before, but I have to disagree with the conclusion you seem to have reached, namely that this would explain Cloudjumper's disappearing wings.
Now, it is certainly true that Cloudjumper has two sets of wings that can act independently, so in principle, it could fly with just two wings. However, having that other set folded would not render them invisible. Rather, it would, as I have said, be like with Toothless when his wings are folded, but they still stick out a noticeable distance from the rest of his body. That is not what's going on in that picture.
Therefore, there are three basic possibilities for this picture. First, it isn't a member of Cloudjumper's species, but rather of some other species. Second, the picture of Cloudjumper was edited for some reason, removing the second set of wings (though why they would do this is beyond me; the four wings are the distinctive thing about Cloudjumper, so why would they hide it in the poster?). Third, Dreamworks came up with a stupid dragon design that doesn't make the slightest lick of sense, just so that they could have magically invisible wings.
Even being as cynical as I am, I don't give that third possibility much credit, but I can't deny that it is technically possible, and a fair bit above Valka Villain Probability.
I wish they would post a couple of clips for this movie, the posters are cool, but I'd like to see a couple of clips for some extra suspense. And I want to see this movie so badly.
I know what it is.. The twins dragons looks more goofy and less intelligent. As well as significantly older. Perhaps telling that they were older, or already ful grown, when the twins trained them? I noticed right away in the book covers Barf and Belch seemed to look more gummy like they were older. I just think they are not as young as the other dragons and have hit a more aged point. That and the animators wanted their persona to match their riders, more duller minded and not as smart, more mischievous and playful.. In my opinion.
I don't think they are being folded like a regular dragon, I think Cloudjumper's second set of wings stick or stay very close to the other pair making it appear like he has one pair of wings. If this is true I would also assume that if the wings didn't stick together and they just stay close to the other pair, one pair of wings most likely mimic the other pair's movements giving the appearance of him having one set of wings.
The only thing I can think of is a youtube video of the actor going off making a joke about coming out of the closet, then going on to say about several Gandalfs that were used for the film and even a little computer animated Gandalf. Thats all I can think of. Youtube video is called "David Letterman - Ian Mckellen Is Out of the Closet"
Umm yup.. again I have nothing against this.. But you asked so.. here it is..
I am pretty sure, almost certain, its about the fact that the actor came "out of the closet" there is a video I just saw where he is advocating for it and trying to lighten the mood with an interviewer.. upon searching.
The style really hasn't changed much. He just looks older. Matured. Aged just as one would expect a guy like him to age. When you're a teenager, you grow up like a weed, and when that stops, you fill out a little. And Hiccup has done just that. I'm just glad DreamWorks kept him mostly the same guy we knew and didn't make him go all Enzo Matrix on us. (And the way a lot of fanfics were written, you'd think a scruffy 400 pound body-builder was inevitable somehow...)
I imagine there are clips they could release that wouldn't be spoilers. The opening scene that was mentioned at Comic-Con is one, as well as the two clips aired at Comic-Con (because let's face it, anyone who would watch clips from the movie already knows the gist of those scenes), but there may well be more. it's doubtful that there would be many, given that there's a lot of plot they have to fit into the running time, but it's entirely possible that there are some short clips that wouldn't contain spoilers.
With that said, I still agree that we probably won't see any clips given out intentionally. I don't recall it being done for films outside of trailers.
In the absence of any evidence to the contrary, I choose to not assume that johntheoceanzap is a homophobe. Innocent until proven guilty and all that.
Completely off-topic: considering the examples of Sir Ian McKellan and George Takei, I can't help but wonder if awesome gay men are somehow attracted to geeky material.
You know, I must say, what with "The Eel Effect" and this screenshot, the animators on Defenders of Berk seem to be getting a lot better at giving Toothless expressions.
It helps that this episode was about Toothless, we haven't had one of those for a while. But after Toothless pulled Hiccup out of the water, they looked barley wet. Mostly just shiny. That is something they should work on, even with budget cuts.
Let objects and characters look wet is one of the hardest effects in computer animation you can imagine, especially if it is fur or cloth you want to make wet. The best representation of wet fur I've seen so far, was one of the scenes in the end of Kung Fu Panda 2.
I was mainly referring to Hiccups hair only slightly drooped, and was still normal colour. If they made his hair darker and cling down like wet hair should that would have satisfied me. The rest was fine for the series, only having so much money to do it. I did however like how it looked when they were under water, they did perfect. And as for the Kung Fu Panda 2 thing, I am sure they did great there, but never have had the chance to see that movie. I really want to see it though.
Isn't that the scene just before Toothless goes completely lo-co and accidentally hit Hiccup with a fire ball, knocking him out? And he is all sad that he hurt him?
Where do I go to read this? I actually could use a few minor spoilers, I have heard a few roumors and are actually a little afraid the movie will be a bit darker then excpected. I heard things like Stoick might die, Toothless may die, Hiccups mom might die, it will follow the books a little more and snotlout will be a traitor to Hiccup and end up dieing in the end, that kind of stuff.
Is it just me or does it look like there is another night fury in the Korean Poster? On the left side near the edge of the page in line with the "2" in the title.
That is Cloudjumper, Valka's dragon, we only know his name but not species. But he is not a Night Fury. (unless he is a titan wing.) And there is also an error, he should have 4 wings.
That was my second guess. That it'd be Valka's dragon. Almost looked like a night fury from the shadow though so yeah, but I was leaning towards it being Valka's :)
i know what you mean, i LOVE Tom Owen's representation of older Hiccup. I just love his style. Its so simple and cute. (i also love that he makes hiccup shorter than astrid <3 )
That was just filler on Fishlegs talking about the Gronckle with dragon stages, they did irrelevant filler on a few dragons with little information. So while that may be true doesn't rule it out entirely.
Hey hey! HTTYD builds starting up again? I was sooooo excited to see your Skrill (which was brilliant). Neat nadder. Wow, I'd love to see how you managed that wing design. I remember your first one was truly excellent, but I can see some really nice detail improvements on this (good eye piece! Creative!). Your mocs are always brilliant. These wings look posable? Will you be posting more images of this to mocpages anytime? Fantastic design.
"Oh, dear sister, our hypothesis appears to be correct. The air offers a much greater resistance to the falling motion to the feather, than it does the to the rock.
Remarkable. Shall we increase our sample size? What say you?
We shall!
I propose we try dropping a large yak, alongside a normal sized dragon rider.
Oh, why sister, that is brilliant... and I'm a normal sized dragon rider, what luck!
Barf and Belch also seem to lack the longer chin spikes. I think I notice in the movie and Legend of the Boneknapper Dragon some ZIpplebacks seem to have longer chin spikes.
While they don't look practically smart, they seem to have more expression than they did in the first movie. I think I see that in their poster, as well as Barf's annoyed expression on Snotlout in the first trailer when he flirts with Ruffnut.
"Everyone, we've had a breakthrough. Ruffnut has determined if you boil yak milk, you can freeze it on a stick, and dip it on a variety of tasty flavorings, including coconut.
I called it Ruff Cream!
Hold on! I though it is Tuff Cream. We've talked about this in the other room you said it could be Tuff Cream. Now did I mishear you, or are you pulling the wool over my eyes, madam?
Now I see while we don't have rainy season on Berk in the series. I notice they really look weird when they get wet. In Free Scauldy, the puddle left from the bucket when they attempt to get Scauldy wet looks pretty off... like plastic.
Why on earth would they do that? Sure, the idea of a four-winged dragon may well be stupid, on how it's specifically executed within the film, but it's going to be in there anyway. You can't just edit Cloudjumper's second set of wings out of the movie*, so why cut them out of the poster?
*Though I must admit, if they edited Cloudjumper out of the movie entirely, then I would become tempted to watch the Korean version, since it would likely force the film to be Valka-less, but that's another matter entirely.
nice
ReplyDeletei am soooo getting the art of how to train your dragon
ReplyDeleteit's time to new wallpaper :D posters are amazing :) <3 <3
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone know why we didn't get another character poster yesterday?
ReplyDeleteI'm thinking they might have gotten a lot of shit from last week's poster (Ruffnut's description) so maybe they stopped giving J-14 the ability to leak their posters?
ReplyDeletebut J-14 got it from HTTYD.com

ReplyDeleteHm, that dragon on the upper left... is that another instance of Toothless or Cloudjumper and Valka?!
ReplyDeleteToothless is flying alone. Looks weird.
ReplyDeletecloudjumper with 2 wings
ReplyDeletesorry.... if you mean, the first picture, that is toothless
ReplyDeleteIt is definetly cloudjumper, but he has only two wings. Maybe the corean wallpaper designers didn't like the idea of a four-winged dragon.
ReplyDeleteMaybe they had some sort of contract that ended in February? Like Dreamworks gave them 5 posters and told them to use them however they wanted to and J-14 decided to post 1 every week to attract visitors to the site, I only visited that place for the posters, in fact I had never heard of it before.
ReplyDeleteLooks like Rush Sykes... :/
ReplyDeleteI see a NIGHT FURY in the 2nd one guys toothless as a friend
ReplyDeleteExactly. But I think they bought only the licenses for 3 posters and now DW will publish the last ones.
ReplyDeleteor he could have the other wings folded in
ReplyDeleteWell, I'm off to find a suitable yak.
ReplyDeletescience!
ReplyDeleteand I am a suitable dragon trainer
ReplyDeletewhat luck
ReplyDeleteJust cloud jumper no valka.

ReplyDeletehaha that ruff and tuff thing we did was hilarious
ReplyDeleteI would rather not know what they are doing so it does not effect what I think of the character they play. I have heard thing about the guy that plays Gandalf. Gandalf has never been the same.... :(

ReplyDeletetrue
ReplyDeleteGot to get back to work. nice talking to you
ReplyDeleteMy brother.
yea same
ReplyDeleteWow, I love that poster! Hiccup and Toothless look so cute and epic! :D
ReplyDeletedoes anyone know if the grapple grounder will be in DoB or HTTYD 2?
ReplyDeleteHiccup is not wearing his usual new armor on the first picture, it doesn't seem to be the same at all and we can see his arms (well thats a first :P) For the other picture, Cloudjumper only has 2 wings, could they be folded in or something?
ReplyDeleteI doubt it, that's a picture from the console game.
ReplyDeleteThe grapple grounder is exclusive to the game, as far as I know. But I could be wrong.
ReplyDeleteHey! Here are more of my sketches
ReplyDeleteK thx
ReplyDeleteBut they are all J-14 exclusives, no? Thats why they all have that big watermark before icelandiceel shops them out. Dreamworks is giving J-14 their posters to release first. If the poster really is being withheld because of that disaster they caused last week then Dreamworks is behind it, not J-14.
ReplyDeleteOh, that could be true too. Maybe they just didn't want to release all of them within a little over a month. Though it kinda sucks, I have a strong hunch that the last poster is Eret and I was looking forward to FINALLY getting to see him for the first time next week.
ReplyDeleteJune seems so far away and im gonna die waiting for the movie
ReplyDeleteIs it possible to reopen the poll since no poster was released? Even though its obviously snotlout on the next poster, seeing the numbers keep going up was cool because I never realized how many people come to this site. I wonder how high it can go.

Also I hope somebody fixes this:

The thumbnail for the Hiccup poster is the good, pretty HQ version but when you click it to download, it brings you to the icky-looking orangey version :/
It is impossible to wait for this movie
ReplyDeleteHowdy all my lovely friends! Off-topic, but Happy Olympics!
ReplyDeleteThx, and I blew the picture up. Behind the one in bottom left is actually a really tiny whispering death. If I had to guess I would say it be a Nightmare.
ReplyDeleteThis is one of my favorite dragons... Shame it doesn't appear in any of the movies or the series... yet.
ReplyDeleteI was kinda hoping it would appear in Defenders of Berk, though... Here's hoping it will appear in the third movie or future seasons of the series...
But I think the golden dragon statue in the ceiling of the Great Hall resembles Grapple Grounder.
I want the Art of How to Train Your Dragon book! :D
ReplyDeleteLet's see what we have in the poster other than Hiccup and Toothless...
I got some macaroni boxes (Can't wait to eat them!) and there appears to be a new dragon on the back of one, still only a silhouette, though.
ReplyDeleteThe far back, the smaller one behind the first one is a whispering death. The other one I have no idea.
ReplyDeleteNotice, people talking about the poster pay more attention to trying to guess what the dragons in the far back are, rather then the epicness of Toothless and Hiccup?
ReplyDeleteActuly, They did make an art Book For the first one.
ReplyDeleteReally? Oh sorry I don't knew.
ReplyDeleteLooks like a Night Fury to me..
ReplyDeleteThe one on top is a night fury, the one under it is unknown.
ReplyDeleteI think the one next to toothless tail is a Skrill.
ReplyDeleteOmergawd.
ReplyDeleteDats a Night Fury in the background...
#IWillBeStarringInDisFilm
I'm almost afraid to ask, but what problems do you have with Sir Ian McKellan? Everything I've ever read about him suggests that he's a decent guy.
ReplyDeleteUm, where exactly do you see a Night Fury in that poster (other than Toothless, of course)? I don't see one, and I've yet to see anyone else mention one.
ReplyDeleteOkay, this has been bugging me all day:
ReplyDeletePeople have been saying that they see a two-winged Cloudjumper in that second poster (leftmost dragon), but I can't see it for the life of me.
BEFORE--------AFTER
ReplyDeleteThis is Cloudjumper from the cover of an HTTYD 2 book, I don't know about you, but he looks pretty much the same as the dragon on the poster, except the two extra wings are missing.
ReplyDeleteThe very small dragon that we can't see is a Whispering Death and I think the dragon near Toothless' tail looks like a Skrill.
ReplyDeleteI think you are mistaking Cloudjumper as a Nightfury, since Cloudjumper also has a tailfin like Toothless. The first time I saw Cloudjumper flying on the cover of a book of the second movie I have also mistaken it for another Nightfury (I kind of knew it wasn't since nighfuries don't have four wings xd)
ReplyDeleteExcept, for, you know, two wings, the fact that the two wings that are present are in a different position (which negate the possibility of it being an edit of the picture you showed), and the fact that the picture in the main blog post is a silhouette, which makes it impossible to pick out any other details. So, apart from the fact that the picture is different in easily the most noteworthy detail of Cloudjumper's design, it's exactly the same.
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone know what the difference in the typhoomerang and timber jack are? Cause no matter how I look at it I just can't seem to tell them apart. The only thing I know is that they have different abilities.
ReplyDeleteI play a game called School of Dragons, and in the game there's a whispering death. And at the end of season 1, we saw Alvin training one. If Alvin is ever revealed to be alive, would the whispering death (named groundsplitter in my game) be the dragon he rides?
ReplyDeletenot much differences, but the typhoomerang is just s cross between timberjack + monsterous nightmare
ReplyDeleteThe Timber Jack and the Typhoomerang are the same dragon..It only has two names because when the teens found Torch they didn't know it was a Timber Jack because he was only a baby so they gave it a new name thinking it was a different dragon.
ReplyDeleteIt definitely is a Cloudjumper.
ReplyDeleteAs for Toothless flying alone, it's merely concept art. It's more of just practicing to perfect the shapes, dynamics and scenery of a situation. Very little of what you see in the concept art makes it to the final film, and Toothless flying alone is guaranteed not to be one of those aspects.
Wheres the thunderdrum??
ReplyDeleteWell, for one thing, Typhoomerangs have legs while Timberjacks are like snakes with wings. Also, Timberjack horns are slender, like a Monstrous Nightmare's, and Typhomerangs' are more bulky, like bull horns. Hoped this helped.
ReplyDeletethey did I have it if you like a pic I will post it for u
ReplyDeleteOne of the new dragons I suppose, can't be a Night Fury because the wings are all wrong...
ReplyDeleteYou guys are awesome!!!!
ReplyDeleteNear the base of the tail the typhoomerang has a slight curve and tassels.
ReplyDeletePersonal message for you, Wingless, I can't reply to your email, it's sent back to me...
ReplyDeleteThx, I never noticed that.
ReplyDeleteI think Cloudjumper can fly with either 2 or 4 wings. At least that's the impression Dean Deblois gave me when he said Cloudjumper has an extra pair of wings that can 'splay' to become an x wing, like the wings were first folded or something and then it extends them.
ReplyDeleteOh yes, I've had a problem with that, sorry. Did you get my response? I tried to send that from another adress.
ReplyDeleteIt looks like a spot the dragon game, so maybe it's just a placeholder they made for it?
ReplyDeleteso there is how to train your dragon 2 mac and cheese?
ReplyDeleteWell, no, I've just checked, and I didn't find anything from you... that's a mystery ! Did a dragon eat this mail ???
ReplyDeleteI think that long tailed dragon is a Whispering Death.
ReplyDeleteVery nice!
ReplyDeleteAlso, the Typhoomerang has two back legs, the Timberjack has no legs.
ReplyDelete:')
ReplyDeleteFirst of all, can I have a source so that I can see (or hear) the specific wording? Because I've checked (to the best of my knowledge) all the pieces of news about HTTYD 2 as they've come out, and I've yet to see any information from an official source regarding Cloudjumper, least of all DeBlois' words (of course, it has been in plenty of pictures and a bit of trailer footage, but that's different from what you're saying).
ReplyDeleteNow, it is certainly true that Cloudjumper has four wings, and it is reasonable to assume that it can use a single pair at a time. That would not, however, render the second set invisible. Dragon wings don't just mould to their sides when not in use. Rather, they would stick out enough to be noticeable (Toothless' wings are a perfect example).
new episode pic:smoke gets in your eye
ReplyDeleteand hicctooth from eel effect
actually the episode description said that alvin will come back to berk and make amends :)
ReplyDeleteand snotlout will be expelled
ReplyDelete1.
ReplyDeleteMinor, off-topic correction: Cloudjumper is not carrying Hiccup in the 1:11 shot.
I can't wait to see what happens to the Smothering Smokebreaths.
ReplyDeleteYes, maybe Snotlout gets on Hiccups nerves.
ReplyDeleteI like the concept art outfit for Hiccup way better then how he looks in the movie now. There is just way too much stuff on him, it takes away more of the Hiccup.
ReplyDeleteThat second one is from the eel effect I am pretty sure.
ReplyDeleteOr smoke breath, there might be only one. I know they travel in packs but there have never been any 'fog monsters' on Berk so it may be one stray from it's pack.
ReplyDeleteIt would seem so... I tried again. There has been some phishing with my email server and somebody got tricked so all mails from that server have been spam. That's why you've been unabled to send anything. I really hope they've fixed this..
ReplyDeleteThe art of how to train your dragon
ReplyDeleteI know this is just opinion, but I disagree.
ReplyDeleteWe know from here:
ReplyDeletehttp://www.usatoday.com/story/life/movies/2013/12/15/cate-blanchett-how-to-train-your-dragon-2/3911613/
If its only one Smokebreath, I hope they train it. Would be pretty awesome to have a trained Smokebreath on Berk :)
ReplyDeleteI doubt that Berk will accept Alvin, he will probably just use them to get back to Outcast Island
ReplyDeleteOr maybe he could be lured to be with Alvin, which would make it insecure for him to stay in the academy, thus needing to get him expelled, thats just a thought though :)
ReplyDeleteAgain y is hiccup and snoutlout standing on Stoick's left and right? Not to menchon stormfly id behind the man! I'm curious to see were there gonna take us or if I'm gonna have to be upset with another lame episode. I expect much more comeing from the last 2 episodes.
ReplyDeleteAbout that thing if the dragon on the upper left in the korean poster is cloudjumper:
ReplyDeleteI've played a little bit around with sharpening and upscaling tools and with color correction and puppet warp you can see, it is definetly an edited version of cloudjumper.
Oh and if anyone want a new phone screen saver:
ReplyDeleteI always wanted Gothi to get a smokebreath.
ReplyDeleteHiccup's eyes seem so different.
ReplyDeleteThe reason I can think of for this would be.. often when drawing child characters your drawing style is different.. simply because the anatomy is different.
ReplyDeleteNow we found out months ago that the new team wants a totally different animation style.
After what Dagur did, I doubt that Alvin is the kind of person to work with traitors, despite his title.
ReplyDeleteThank you! :)
ReplyDeleteThanks! :)
ReplyDeleteFor anybody who is interested, I have more sketches, fan fiction, and random httyd stuff on my blog. Check it out! http://httydfangirlforever.blogspot.com/
ReplyDeleteIt would definitely be interesting, and it would get a lot more foggy around Berk. And I don't think Toothless would take to kindly to it, him having a metal tail.
ReplyDeleteThis is wonderful, thank you :)
ReplyDeleteYep, with Photoshop and the Efex Pro color correction plug-in. :)
ReplyDeleteThank you for the source, which I do recall seeing before, but I have to disagree with the conclusion you seem to have reached, namely that this would explain Cloudjumper's disappearing wings.
ReplyDeleteNow, it is certainly true that Cloudjumper has two sets of wings that can act independently, so in principle, it could fly with just two wings.
No, Typoomerangs are most definitely a different species than Timberjacks, trust me, I've studied those two thouroughly :D
ReplyDeleteIt was a spot the dragon game, but I'm not sure whether or not it's a placeholder dragon.
ReplyDeleteI'd like to see what the other official posters would look like.
ReplyDeleteI wish they would post a couple of clips for this movie, the posters are cool, but I'd like to see a couple of clips for some extra suspense. And I want to see this movie so badly.
ReplyDeleteThat would be spoilers. They don't do that on purposes. Only in accidental leaks.
ReplyDeleteI don't think I could handle anymore suspense o_O
ReplyDeleteYessssssssss :D
ReplyDeleteI know what it is..
ReplyDeleteI don't think they are being folded like a regular dragon, I think Cloudjumper's second set of wings stick or stay very close to the other pair making it appear like he has one pair of wings. If this is true I would also assume that if the wings didn't stick together and they just stay close to the other pair, one pair of wings most likely mimic the other pair's movements giving the appearance of him having one set of wings.
ReplyDeleteI'm not against this or anything.. but.. This is the only thing I can think of..
ReplyDeletehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MDHZlqOLf74
The only thing I can think of is a youtube video of the actor going off making a joke about coming out of the closet, then going on to say about several Gandalfs that were used for the film and even a little computer animated Gandalf. Thats all I can think of. Youtube video is called "David Letterman - Ian Mckellen Is Out of the Closet"
ReplyDeleteUmm yup.. again I have nothing against this.. But you asked so.. here it is..
ReplyDeleteI am pretty sure, almost certain, its about the fact that the actor came "out of the closet" there is a video I just saw where he is advocating for it and trying to lighten the mood with an interviewer.. upon searching.
The style really hasn't changed much. He just looks older. Matured. Aged just as one would expect a guy like him to age. When you're a teenager, you grow up like a weed, and when that stops, you fill out a little. And Hiccup has done just that.
ReplyDeleteI'm just glad DreamWorks kept him mostly the same guy we knew and didn't make him go all Enzo Matrix on us. (And the way a lot of fanfics were written, you'd think a scruffy 400 pound body-builder was inevitable somehow...)
dude, I cant take my eyes off it! Awesome work:) love the darker nuance!
ReplyDeleteI imagine there are clips they could release that wouldn't be spoilers.
ReplyDeleteWith that said, I still agree that we probably won't see any clips given out intentionally. I don't recall it being done for films outside of trailers.
new toothless pic!
ReplyDeletehe is so cute
ReplyDeleteAwesome! :)
ReplyDeletethx!
ReplyDeleteIn the absence of any evidence to the contrary, I choose to not assume that johntheoceanzap is a homophobe. Innocent until proven guilty and all that.
ReplyDeleteCompletely off-topic: considering the examples of Sir Ian McKellan and George Takei, I can't help but wonder if awesome gay men are somehow attracted to geeky material.
You know, I must say, what with "The Eel Effect" and this screenshot, the animators on Defenders of Berk seem to be getting a lot better at giving Toothless expressions.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you like it. :)
ReplyDeleteits fine :)
ReplyDeleteIt helps that this episode was about Toothless, we haven't had one of those for a while. But after Toothless pulled Hiccup out of the water, they looked barley wet. Mostly just shiny. That is something they should work on, even with budget cuts.
ReplyDeleteI don't know much of what your talking about here, because I didn't get to go to Comic con. T-T I can't afford it.
ReplyDeleteLet objects and characters look wet is one of the hardest effects in computer animation you can imagine, especially if it is fur or cloth you want to make wet. The best representation of wet fur I've seen so far, was one of the scenes in the end of Kung Fu Panda 2.
ReplyDeleteThere are descriptions of the two clips online, if you're interested, but fair warning: the latter contains a spoiler of some note.
ReplyDeleteI was mainly referring to Hiccups hair only slightly drooped, and was still normal colour.
ReplyDeleteIsn't that the scene just before Toothless goes completely lo-co and accidentally hit Hiccup with a fire ball, knocking him out? And he is all sad that he hurt him?
ReplyDeleteWhere do I go to read this? I actually could use a few minor spoilers, I have heard a few roumors and are actually a little afraid the movie will be a bit darker then excpected. I heard things like Stoick might die, Toothless may die, Hiccups mom might die, it will follow the books a little more and snotlout will be a traitor to Hiccup and end up dieing in the end, that kind of stuff.
ReplyDeleteHere's the description I've read of those scenes:
ReplyDeletehttp://everythinghttyd.tumbler.com/post/55855685562/httyd-2-at-sdcc-dwa-panel
I think of the Timberjack's body as worm like. Its just a skinny thing. XD
ReplyDeletewhere did you get that.(I am doing this from my computer not my ipod and I am not logged in)
ReplyDeletehe's grown so much <3 :)
ReplyDeleteIs it just me or does it look like there is another night fury in the Korean Poster? On the left side near the edge of the page in line with the "2" in the title.
ReplyDelete-innocent sad 'I'm Sorry' Dragon face here-
ReplyDeleteThat is Cloudjumper, Valka's dragon, we only know his name but not species. But he is not a Night Fury. (unless he is a titan wing.) And there is also an error, he should have 4 wings.
ReplyDeleteThat was my second guess. That it'd be Valka's dragon. Almost looked like a night fury from the shadow though so yeah, but I was leaning towards it being Valka's :)
ReplyDeleteThat does make me think, the screaming death is a titan wing whispering death, maybe cloud jumper is a titan wing night fury?
ReplyDeleteI think Titan wings only apply to boulder class dragons. I remember hearing that in the book of dragons DVD.
ReplyDeleteThat's cool! And that's a lot of blue pieces.
ReplyDeletei know what you mean, i LOVE Tom Owen's representation of older Hiccup. I just love his style. Its so simple and cute. (i also love that he makes hiccup shorter than astrid <3 )
ReplyDeleteThat was just filler on Fishlegs talking about the Gronckle with dragon stages, they did irrelevant filler on a few dragons with little information. So while that may be true doesn't rule it out entirely.
ReplyDeleteHey hey!
ReplyDeleteIt's at next on the Skrill-like dragon behind Toothless. You gotta zoom it to see it clearly though...
ReplyDeleteOh, right, I spot Whispering Death too...
"Oh, dear sister, our hypothesis appears to be correct. The air offers a much greater resistance to the falling motion to the feather, than it does the to the rock.
ReplyDeleteRemarkable. Shall we increase our sample size? What say you?
We shall!
I propose we try dropping a large yak, alongside a normal sized dragon rider.
Oh, why sister, that is brilliant... and I'm a normal sized dragon rider, what luck!
Aha! I'm off to find a suitable yak."
Science! *cough cough, Tuff fainted* XD
Barf and Belch also seem to lack the longer chin spikes. I think I notice in the movie and Legend of the Boneknapper Dragon some ZIpplebacks seem to have longer chin spikes.
ReplyDeleteWhile they don't look practically smart, they seem to have more expression than they did in the first movie. I think I see that in their poster, as well as Barf's annoyed expression on Snotlout in the first trailer when he flirts with Ruffnut.
This is much better! *O*
ReplyDeleteI heard Gobber is gonna have his own dragon soon. Probably it's the Smokebreath?
ReplyDelete"Everyone, we've had a breakthrough. Ruffnut has determined if you boil yak milk, you can freeze it on a stick, and dip it on a variety of tasty flavorings, including coconut.
ReplyDeleteI called it Ruff Cream!
Hold on! I though it is Tuff Cream. We've talked about this in the other room you said it could be Tuff Cream. Now did I mishear you, or are you pulling the wool over my eyes, madam?
You would."
Now I see while we don't have rainy season on Berk in the series. I notice they really look weird when they get wet. In Free Scauldy, the puddle left from the bucket when they attempt to get Scauldy wet looks pretty off... like plastic.
ReplyDeleteOr they probably edited it and Korean parties don't really like the idea of a four winged dragon...
ReplyDeleteAnd Typhoomerang is stockier than Timberjack plus they have legs while Timberjack doesn't. Timberjack looks somewhat like a winged snake.
ReplyDeleteSo, at one point does it yell, "Stormfly, maximise!"?
ReplyDeleteIn all seriousness, impressive work, though this is hardly my area of expertise.
Why on earth would they do that? Sure, the idea of a four-winged dragon may well be stupid, on how it's specifically executed within the film, but it's going to be in there anyway. You can't just edit Cloudjumper's second set of wings out of the movie*, so why cut them out of the poster?
ReplyDelete*Though I must admit, if they edited Cloudjumper out of the movie entirely, then I would become tempted to watch the Korean version, since it would likely force the film to be Valka-less, but that's another matter entirely.
