Happy New Year!
Posted on Thursday, January 01, 2015 by IcelandicEel
Happy New Year! 2014 was a great year for dragons, with How to Train Your Dragon 2 being the 11th highest grossing film of the year (being narrowly beaten by The Hobbit) and the highest grossing animated film of the year. And with the new season of the TV series coming out in the spring, it looks like we're going to have a dragonesque 2015 as well!
Unfortunately, because of time constraints, we weren't able to have a Secret Odin gift exchange this year like we have had before, but you should definitely expect a gift exchange to happen in the near future!

What about the interview with Dane Stogner?
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year fellow dragon trainers and riders.
ReplyDeleteThor! Do my eyes deceive me? A new post! YES PLEASE!
ReplyDeleteWell then this is interesting. Good to see you are back Icelandic, any word on the situation with zetaboards and the forums?
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year! Rats, I was hoping to be a secret Odin but I understand.
ReplyDelete(overly conveniently playing opening half to "Should I Know You?")
ReplyDeleteBy beasts of Itchy Armpit, it's Max IcelandicEel! Happy New Year- Salutations- Jiminy had a jollily Christmas and, well, SPEEDIIIING!
Now that I'm through with Jim Carrey ranting in the nasal Curry voice, what had happened? Just what had happened? For 46 days, I was convinced that a working post depended on a working forum. We've been rescheduling Secret Odin and anticipating your return. Was something not well back-season?
And did anything go for the Dane Stogner interview?
Yay, A new post!
ReplyDelete7 months later, I still can't believe the first movie and everything afterwards were just the opening act to all the chaos that happened in HTTYD 2. Obviously now, it was just the calm before the storm for what's to come as the countdown to the finale continues. Happy new year fellow HTTYD fans!
ReplyDeleteThat's complete nonsense! Katzenberg already said the third one is the big finale
ReplyDeleteHAPPY NEW YEAR MY FELLOW DRAGON FANS!!!
ReplyDeletehttp://www.kpopstarz.com/articles/156339/20141225/how-to-train-your-dragon-3-release-date-finding-dory.htm
ReplyDeleteI don't trust that website
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year! Now we wait for the new season of Dragons! Oh, and HTTYD3. XD
ReplyDeleteWOW!!! A new post!!! ^.^ Makes me realize just how much I miss this site! And of course you guys as well. :) Happy new year everyone!!!
ReplyDeleteWhat about movie pilot?
ReplyDeleteImportant thing is 3rd movie is officially the end of Hiccup and Toothless's story.
ReplyDeleteWe'll just have to see.
ReplyDeleteSorry but a 4th movie for the time being is out of the question
ReplyDeleteI miss this site and I'm so glad it has a new update. =) I hope we get some news soon for the newest season to come up, I miss talking to all the Dragon fans. )= I hope you all had a fantastic New Year! =3
ReplyDeleteAlright, I'm just saying I've seen quite a few articles.
ReplyDeleteGood
ReplyDeleteOh, the usual. Everywhere was closed and cold, and we ate cod at Krabby Patties (yes, I'm being literal, and the ingredients are cheese, lettuce, tomato, and *chipotle sauce* if any kids ask). Either that made us an ill morning or the chili we left on. Either one won't surprise me. I can't really stand taking a swallow of chili, spiced foods or seafood. Something off-puts me about them and this may be why. Other than that, it was just a normal weekend indoors.
ReplyDeleteEeeekk! New post! Happy new year everyone, can not wait to see what the world of dragons throws at us this year! :)
ReplyDeleteAnd I miss posting! Unfortunately, I've had a ton of non-dragon work, and there really haven't been too many new dragons anyway. Happy new year!
ReplyDeleteUgh, the thing is a mess. I've been waiting for quite a while for them to allow me to re-activate the forums.berksgrapevine.com subdomain. Nothing yet, but you can visit it at http://w11.zetaboards.com/berksforumvine/index in the meantime.
ReplyDeleteIf you guys want to check out more Dragon stuff, you should come to the HTTYD Wiki :)

Yes! Finally! Just when I was getting worried, I came home today to discover that my "Dragon" light had come on (which always comes on when there is a new post). My family were a little confused why I was so excited because of a lamp!
ReplyDeleteDo we know anything about the new series yet? Like, when is it starting, etc?
Thanks for the heads up. Now on the matter of Secret Odin, do you wish to have any part in it or its organization or shall we just continue with what mycove has organized?
ReplyDeleteHow'd you get a Dragon lamp? To me, a lamp that activates when a new post shows up is like having a plant indicate E.T.'s health! Only there's technology, fantastic technology! ILM! How'd you get one?
ReplyDeleteI made it myself - using a Raspberry Pi computer which constantly checks the RSS feed and just a standard lamp with a custom Dragon style shade on it. When the Raspberry Pi detects a new post, it activates a relay switching on the lamp. If anyone is interested, I could go more in depth about how it works on the forums.
ReplyDeleteShame the Hobbit out-grossed it... but Ah well. It is nice to have a new post here! As others have said, we missed you! But... their hasn't been too many new dragon updates anyway, at least not many that I have seen.
ReplyDelete"Should I know you" ??? I've gotta try that !!! Where did you get it ?
ReplyDeleteHey, Icelandic ! It's so good to have you back ! Happy New Year to you !
ReplyDeleteSo, you're planning to organize Secret Odin, right ? We've been hoping for it ! Do you know if you will be able to make it happen pretty soon ?
And with an upcoming new season, I seriously hope the site is gradually coming back to the level of activity it had before the summer !
I believe Dean Deblois. could make one more sequel. For us Dragon fans I mean it takes 3 to 4 years to make a fourth and final movie. even if HTTYD3 isn't the last one which will be shocking if it is the last one. but if they are thinking of making a fourth sequel like Toy story 4. I would be proud and go see HTTYD3 & HTTYD4 and applause in my mind if it's mindblowing. I do hope they change there mind in a few years like Toy story and say why didn't we think of a fourth movie OMG. :)
ReplyDeleteThe third film is expected to pick up with Hiccup as an adult, in a world where there are no more dragons. Realease:June 9th 2017.Movie takes 3 years to make HTTYD3. For more preps. Storyline. Characters.
Happy New Year everybody!! Hope you all are destined to have a great year filled with dragons (who is excited for the new TV series?!!?) and good times. Dragonspeed all the way, and God bless. :) Happy 2015!
ReplyDeleteXD
ReplyDeleteI love your new picture Splash!
It just made my day!
YAY!!!!
ReplyDeleteAnyone else seen the Hobbit 3?
ReplyDeleteI did!!
And I saw Drago in there!!
XD
I saw it!
ReplyDeleteDrago? Please explain. :)
I have! :) What scene was Drago in!?
ReplyDeleteDo tell...aaannndd my voice turned into that of Elliot telling Gertie to hide E.T.: (with playful fingers) "You know what would happen if you do tell....."
ReplyDeleteJust so I have this in my notes (I do it all the time out there), RSS feed, Raspberry Pi computer (in case it's for some reason), and relay switching. Go ahead, expand.
HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE :D
ReplyDeleteAwesome, the things you can do !
ReplyDeleteArgh, that reminded me I had once found the "flying with mother" sheet music, I thought it was on the Panda Tooth website, but I can't find it anymore :( Do you know how I can find it by any chance ?
And yes, I knew the alexander sheen site, as well as sebastian wolff. I am amazed at how gifted they are !
AT LONG LAST A POST!
ReplyDeleteFinally :D
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year, everyone!
YAY tv series!
ReplyDeleteAnd I'm still learning! But as I learn, I realize things that my PrintMusic program can't do. The one trill from "Together, We Map the World" was supposed to be flat, but I couldn't get a playable flat (graphics are ignored by playback). Also, it does not give the option to make a tremolo between two notes, which forces me to insert every 32nd note individually. But one thing I can't blame on the program is my tendency to ignore hand range until I can no longer stand to sacrifice notes. [):>/}
ReplyDeleteAlex Sheen and Jarrod Radnich are my favorite piano arrangers. They are advanced, though. But for those who'd like a lesson on what piano can REALLY do, I highly recommend checking their works.
For "Flying with Mother", try searching for the Synthesia playback video on Youtube. I personally believe it was Sebastian Wolfe (GermanSeaBass)'s arrangement because the ending's changed to a cadence instead of the abrupt crash-landing music and the arrangement is modified in his style. Synthesia tells all.
"By high noon Monday, this will be the top post-"
ReplyDelete"HOOOOOOOMMMMMMEEE!!!!!"
You mean Thror or Denethor, right?
ReplyDelete(P.S. I've only seen the first Hobbit and the third Lord of the Rings, so far only once for each.)
Turkey & Ham-- oh, wait!
ReplyDeleteErr, yes. the...TV series.
Been rather such a long time. When is it coming back---?
Oh, no. (NNNETFLIIIX!)
(copied from earlier post)
ReplyDeleteHere's the "Vinterns Kalla Frost" song Nightshade and I were trying to find, translated from Swedish to English via Google translate (not really the best option). The question is, can anyone find the original East-Norse translation?:
Beyond the fields and forests
frost ' hills are
Valleys leads wind
over rocks and thickets
We are men of the hill
riches beyond the control
On these affections
get our salt in the wounds
(refrain):
Mountains and hills glitter
cold winter frost
Dormant and faithful here
Resting on his post
Powers and powerful seid
protects hill- acetic
As and van and elf and dwarf
have supported us given
Upon the guild mountain
is our beautiful hall
Gillet our protected
of the cut and the Electoral
The sound of speech and singing
Down the mountain reaches
The riders in the depths
Waiting in the crannies
(refrain)
Main out struggling
belongs frost Hird
Coat drums rate
in battle dance so wild
Underworld dwarfs
knowledge and power
Dark assets' pacts
creates modes grandeur
( refrain)
I can't get footage for fanvids anyway. I only get ideas.
ReplyDeleteHey cool! The site's still alive! Looking forward to seeing where 2015 takes us with the Dragons series.
ReplyDeletemiss the site , happy new year ! and i have a question : the new TV serie will be in spring or summer ?!
ReplyDeleteDagur kills Mildew in this upcoming season of "Dragons." T_T
ReplyDeleteRIP Mildew
Hail Mildew!
Jarrod didn't do any compositions of HTTYD. He did arrange some John Williams music and his version of "I Saw Three Ships". They sound fantastic, though they are a tad more difficult than Alex Sheen arrangements (not even counting the pedal). If you check out some virtuosic arrangements on musicnotes.com (may require google chrome), you will find him and get an audio playback of the first page. Now, I'm not familiar with "I Saw Three Ships" aside from its premise, but none of the other arrangements (the ones with lyrics) sounded like his, but I enjoy his because his sounds very spirited. I do wish all those arrangers received more attention because they are fantastic at keeping the integrity and spirit of the recording when they transfer it to piano, unlike Dan Coates who simplifies it to the point of becoming a dull, blocky sounding theme. Unfortunately my keyboard (Casio LK-100) doesn't have the range of a real piano and the keys sound terrible for such movements as glissandos and tremolos. There's no touch sensitivity. I'm working on HTTYD2 arrangement #3 right now, but I think I go back to school tomorrow, even though I do recall they mentioned Jan 8th--Thursday.
ReplyDeleteWe had a fake-out with Alvin, whom he may have taken some lesson in survival from. But then again, Mildew was too cantankerous to watch such a demonstration. It may very well be for real. I'll miss him. He catalyzed the conflict in one of my favorite episodes, "When Lightning Strikes".
ReplyDeleteYou know, the leader of the bad guys? (Oarks, are they called?)
ReplyDeleteI mean, he's basically Drago in another form.
No left arm, scar covered face, a weapon he can swing around madly, and an evil strategist.
Come on! Sounds like Drago to me.
happy new year every one
ReplyDeleteAny new info about the other site ice?
ReplyDeleteAs am I but what we still need to know is how HTTYD 2's events will affect the new season.
ReplyDeleteI saw Jarrod didn't do httyd, but his work is impressive nonetheless ! (and I quickly forgot about trying to play his sheet music ! :p)
ReplyDeleteYou sound such a big piano fan, I hope you can get a better keyboard/piano soon ! I'm not an intensive player, so I need much time to learn ! But I learned to play accompaniements too, so I can learn the music on the piano quicker, and sing along ! (I'm a huuuge musical and Disney fan as well !)
I've never tried to play with Synthesia, have you ? How helpful is it actually ?
I used to dislike sung musicals as a kid, but now I'm only covering my ears during end credit songs (beginning with Frozen). Maybe because it was a surprise, maybe it was to over-joyous nature or the fact that the music seemed to never have an end in sight. I first discovered score music when I saw Dinosaur (some consider it to sound like temp tracks struggling to capture epicness, but until HTTYD, it was my favorite score, and many key moments fit the music perfectly. I mean, isn't that just the very composition of notes and instrumentation you'd expect to hear when you picture a wall being pressed open by wearying dinos trapped in a desert cave?)
ReplyDeleteI don't have Synthesia. I've tried the free version, but all it had were tutorials on selected public-domain songs, so it proved unusable without purchase. I'm just wondering if Synthesia requires MIDI performance or if it reads digital sheet music without pre-recorded performance.
I'm not a performer at the piano, either. I focus more on how to write music. But I have noticed that for some reason, it's infinitely easier to do a melody on a natural piano. The sound flows and resonates much better, and the keys are made for good performance instead of built-in tutorials.
I love that episode!
ReplyDeletesorry for being five days late..but uh..hapy new year my fellow dragon riders! =D
ReplyDeleteThor's angry lightning vs. metal is the most epic misunderstanding by Vikings ever!
ReplyDeleteHe could fake his death, and dye his hair red!
ReplyDeleteNope, I didn't die.
ReplyDeleteThank Oden there's another post, or I might just have turned into Once Upon A Time fan...
http://youtu.be/5oWyltdmJ-c i found dawn of the dragon racers john sanford returned to direct this project i really enjoyed stoick in this and the subtle hiccstrid scenes btw double braids heh anyway enjoy
ReplyDeleteI wonder how many suns there is in that picture... :p
ReplyDeletereally killing now huh that reminds me when zaheer killed the earth queen korra was a good sequel series i just wish they established korrasami better since all i could see was good friendship between them
ReplyDeleteProbably 4 target lights
ReplyDelete-Toothless lighting
-sunset on rock
-background mountain lighting
-light reflected on Hiccup
AND 2 Omni for all the world!
...or maybe the sun is just behind Toothless' back. Animation!
Aaannnd, there's Valka and Stoic's Son
Just came onto the site for the first time in a few weeks. It's sad that we might be entering hibernation mode soon. Only 882 days to go...
ReplyDeleteI found on you tube, they made a commentary for gift of the night fury on how they made it. And they explain it like with httyd 1 and 2.
ReplyDeleteCrazy, is that you?
ReplyDeleteokay, thanks!
ReplyDeleteHi dragon fans and Happy New Year from
ReplyDelete"King Toothless"
You mean the Animation Corner! Mixed with audio-video commentary, behind-the-scenes, and... yep, I love those things. Go SerimonVideo for uploading this and the special feature from the deluxe collector's edition, "How to Find Your Dragon" and the making-of documentary! By the way, where did he find that documentary (called "Finding the Story")?
ReplyDeletewww.youtube.com/watch?v=usS3YFqiflo
So I rewatched HTTYD2 and still couldn't find this Red Mildew. I have in on DVD, and the TV tends to anti-alias the image, which out lines details in obscuring white streaks. Can't see anyone in the crowd and pause for a close look at the same time.
ReplyDeleteWith that said, I found out there were actually two versions of the track "Dragon Racing". The OST version actually comes from the final half of the end credits, and you can tell which version it is because the opening has energetic strings underneath the brass fanfare. The opening race version (from the Expanded Soundtrack), Has the slow, dramatic overture of the brass from the first film, with the key signature changed. I say this because it took me a while to figure out how the DreamWorks logo was used over the energetic track opening, only to find that it wasn't. And now I'm torn between including the energetic strings and not including them. I don't have an option to create an ossia staff (a small partial staff above the regular staff which is basically used to say, "or you may play this with your hand instead") in PrintMusic, so I can't split both in one sheet.
Happy new year fellow dragon fans!
ReplyDeleteHAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!!! again, sorry for being over a week late XXD
ReplyDelete800-8-tee
ReplyDeleteHappy new years 10 days ago! :D xD
ReplyDeleteThere still may be a 4th movie. I have read some articles talking about it but also read other articles stating the 3rd movie as the final one. I think at this point in time, it's just a rumour so let's not rule out the possibility. Will just have to wait and see if an official announcement is ever made about it.
ReplyDeleteI believe the season will continue where Defenders of Berk left off... so Hiccup will be younger than his HTTYD2 self and we will get more explanations on his creation of the flight suit, his growing up, and his evolving relationship with Astrid. That is what I have read... though I can't remember where, so I guess I could be wrong!
ReplyDeleteI'm skeptical of this direction but I guess we will see what hapown since one of HTTYD 2's glitches was how Stoick and Gobber got their new dragons and other things that were left unexplained but I guess when spring arrives, time will decide that.
ReplyDeleteThere's a new HTTYD game called Dreamworks Dragons: Hero portal.
ReplyDeleteFrom the review I saw around the web, it's a simple 'slide' game with some shooting. There's an option where you need to buy the figure to unlock a dragon character onto the game.
HTTYD is a story about friendship and forgiveness. Hiccup and Toothless share the strongest bond, even if both have suffered centuries of war between the 2 species. (You all already know that !)
ReplyDeleteNow you've probably heard about the events that happened in France this past week.
I wish people could see how powerful forgiveness can be, and that there are other ways than hatred.
I wish people stopped killing each other.
That was something I wanted to write down.
I'm so excited for the new series. Like, you have no idea.
ReplyDeleteMy sympathies to the people of France. It is a pity that civilization must find itself in peril at this time, but we can only hope that we can get our act together to defeat those who would do us harm. Vive le France.
ReplyDeleteWould anyone like to guess the many ways in which 2014 would not be like 2014? Entertainment, politics, social, economical. 14 accompanies the biggest changes for some reason!
ReplyDelete(I started thinking about this comment ever since I saw the vintage 80s commercial for Apple computers: "Join the revolution, and find out why 1984 won't be like...1984!" So much happened.)
We lost three Malaysian/ Asian Airplanes in the course of a single year, so definitely a dark year for aviation.
ReplyDeleteThe rise of ISIS is certainly going to be looked upon as a major event in the war against radical Islam, how the West defends itself (if at all) is yet to be determined.
Of course a momentous year for us dragon fanatics, but I believe that goes without saying.
I personally believe that 2014 year will be looked back on as one of a sequence of years in which technology truly began to dominate society and culture, both for better and worse.
Overall not the best year of my life, but certainly not the worst. I'll see if 2015 can impress, but its so far off to a bad start. Here's hoping.
How to Train Your Dragon 2 won Best Animated Film at the Golden Globe Awards 2015!
ReplyDeleteHere's the video of Dean DeBlois and Bonnie Arnold accepting the award.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LJA3KJItnCI
This is great news! As it was said on reddit, suddenly the whole "Lego Movie has the Oscar in the bag" claim is weakened. Here's hoping guys :)
Wish he had mentioned John Powell, but such is the nature of acceptance speeches. Go dragons.
ReplyDeleteThat's awesome news.
ReplyDeleteNow 2 awards for httd2.
well deserved.
Surprised and disappointed. While HTTYD 2 was definitely good, and had better moments than The Lego Movie, the latter was better executed overall, with no weak moments (which HTTYD 2 had in spades), and thus the more worthy recipient of the award.
ReplyDeleteMeanwhile, it seems that HTTYD 2 didn't even get a BAFTA nomination.
http://www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-30741418
You know, that's going a bit far in the opposite direction. Now, I haven't seen The Boxtrolls, so maybe it's better than HTTYD 2, but looking at the Tomatometer, I doubt it.
Here's hoping that the Oscars give HTTYD 2 the nomination it deserves, and The Lego Movie the win it deserves.
Also (and more importantly, in the end), I hope this doesn't go to DeBlois' head. There are few things in the arts worse than a satisfied artist. That just leads to stagnation, and the third film really needs to be better than the second to bring things to a satisfying conclusion.
Dragons won at the Golden Globes! :D
ReplyDeleteBachelor Clooney had wed, gas dropped prices for the first time since... my birth, Ebola, the 3rd unsupervised birth of a condor since 1997 (California), the Cosby accusations, record early snowstorm (18 days fast), a threatened terrorism over a Seth Rogan comedy along with the hack of Sony, and I heard Australia was in time for a new prime minister election, and both candidates appeared disagreeable (two posts back). There were an unprecedented 12 feature-length animated films, with no Pixar. Very little good happened in the radio music category (not counting "Pompeii," as that was released in Britain a year before it hit the U.S.)
ReplyDeleteI know! -Jumps up and down a little- I can't wait.
ReplyDelete(I like your profile pic and username)
He probably believes he isn't supposed to have say on what defines "good music". Dean was particular about this in the conventions, saying he knows next to nothing about how music works, and that Powell blew him away with the first score and (somehow) surpassed that bar for the second.
ReplyDeleteI found him after rewinding...twice.
ReplyDeleteHe doesn't look exactly like Mildew...I call him Lichen, Son of Mildew.
Anyway! Thank you for the comment about the new cards. I still can't get in, but yay! I knew there would be a Bewilderbeast! How good is it?
Thanks for the feedback!
ReplyDeleteSo far, opponent Drago's Bewilderbeast has beat me every time. Oh, and I got the Zippleback to beat the Red Death yesterday, but I can't get Toothless to do the same. I still haven't tried the Scuttleclaws (dragon babies) against a Bewilderbeast because they're from a lower level.
Vlah!
ReplyDeleteSorry, it's been a while since there was a live-action picture in the "Top Posts" slot.
Can you imagine real Scuttleclaws against a Bewilderbeast? They might actually not do too bad seeing as how they are immune to his control.
ReplyDeleteI'll try them next time.
ReplyDeleteI must say that Drago's Bewilderbeast has the Alpha Control. Valka's only has the icy blast.
I find it really sad when people resort to violence when there are other ways to solve the problem. Like they could have just gone to the news paper place and told them that they didn't like what they were doing and lodge a complaint agents them. Shurly if even one of them had seen HTTYD 1 then they would have seen that there were issues with Thoothless being a dragon. See the Scene when Hiccup had to battle the monstrous night mare (Hookfang) and Thoothless came to save him. After Thoothless revelence Stoick argued that "they killed hundreds of us"" and we've killed thousands of them".
ReplyDeleteMy mind just says, WHY? WHY? WHY? Why did they have to kill and then "run like cowards"? That was TWLEVE lives TAKEN for what? In a way not taking a JOKE as I under stand? For just getting back? Revenge????? How broken has this world become? And that is all from me
It's only January people! What a horrible start to the year
ReplyDeleteCouldn't agree with you more !
ReplyDeleteThanks !
ReplyDeleteHaha yeah. D'aw, you sweet ;)
ReplyDeleteAw, that you! I like yours too!! :D
ReplyDelete
