ReplyDeleteSo there's an internal story-keeper within the movie itself. Kind of a break in the fourth way if you as me. Now there are two walls of reality to look through: the author's being between the HP world and the moviegoers'.

ReplyDeleteWhen in the interview did DeBlois say that Sanders was back? I watched the entire thing and, while I was doing other things at the time, I thought I was paying enough attention that I wouldn't miss news that good.
ReplyDeleteAnd good news it would be. DeBlois' two collaborations with Sanders - Lilo and Stitch and HTTYD - were both great, while his solo effort on HTTYD 2 was not (it was good, but not great). Now, correlation does not equal causation, but it's enough of a pattern that I'm willing to invest some hope in it. As I haven't seen The Croods, I'm not sure whether Sanders is some sort of genius, or whether he and DeBlois just happen to work really together, but either way, getting back to the system that works strikes me as a very, very good thing.
Just remember the first httyd, in that one Sanders and Deblois worked together and at least for me is better than httyd2, for example was deeper and more balanced in general, was also more romantic and a suitable soundtrack (was only orchestra and not with lyrics... they put Jonsi at the end and only 1 time, not like the second one) that's important

He doesn't mention it in the interview. But Sanders is still executive producing. Dean's still contemplating whether he'd like to produce or would rather stay with the creative side of the team.

Do Executive Producers really do all that much? I was under the impression they were just "the most famous people we could find who would give approval and/or money". I mean, no one's calling the Transformers movies Steven Spielberg films, are they?
ReplyDeleteAt any rate, if Sanders isn't actually involved at a creative level, then I don't care if his name's in the credits.
I think we have some crossed wires here, since I completely agree with you. In short:

Haha, there are definitely people working on both the movies and TV show who check the site and look at the comments, but it's definitely cool that he is one of them. *waves* Hi Dean!
ReplyDeleteThey provide the resources for the equipment and money necessary for the movie to be made. Though it's not a creative job, it does affect what creative choices are able to be done. They also seem to be the ones who decide the audience and will in rare occasions press the director to re-edit the movie to avoid a high rating (Examples include "Rio" and "The Land Before Time"). Though, I'm sure Spielberg wasn't into the creative process aside from providing a few sources to use in Transformers. But then again, he is a co-founder of DreamWorks SKG so at least one of the three of them had to contribute to the film somehow. Spielberg-Katzenberg-G?

ReplyDeleteThe cases where the Executive Producers have any impact on the creative process are, from what I gather, the exception rather than the rule. At any rate, since Sanders was an Executive Producer on the second film, and that wasn't enough to fix its many flaws, him having the exact same role for the third film doesn't give me any hope whatsoever.

I had a dream once, where DW held a competition or something like that to see who the biggest dragon fan is. The prize is like, this Apollo pack which the fan that wins can play around with it, make little movies with the DW movie characters. That'd be cool.

ReplyDeleteThanks for the hint. I heard it's one of those very abstract films, which makes it very difficult to appeal to anyone. But when someone is intrigued by the experience they can't really explain why like they could with a normal film. I haven't seen anime (unless you count Avatar and Korra as anime, which I don't since they're American-produced), but it'll be a while before I find that film.

ReplyDeleteSo far, all the toys are at Target, on one third side of a single isle, but nothing more. Looking for the other merchandise is like looking for "The Prince of Egypt". That movie is literally a week younger than me and it took 17 years to find!
I'd probably want the Apollo pack. I mean, playing around with Hiccup and Toothless? That would be so cool! But a trip to DW would be pretty amazing, too.
ReplyDeleteAnd then I dreamed the winner became a star athlete through college, and ran into his friend named Billis nine more times, and raised fourteen houses right off the ground. Out came a sundial, out came a wick. Out came a chair for the guard was at bay. Day after night, he would guard his memoirs of athletes and homes and his friend named Billis. And when he sank down, he travelled, sitting on a dragon with no realize of how it got under. Up through the time, he soared under sky. And I wonder if he ever thought of Dean. After his prime, he hadn't forgot what was exclusive to him, the trip to a Berk. He builds his own world around what could have seen, and not one little dragon was left un-abound. Whoso had gone up to win sweeps and stake up, will hold the experience close when he can, if perhaps unexpected.

Did you watched the making of httyd? (the first) so far I understand that Sanders cooperate and gives ideas about the narrative of the plot, even more, some others helpers and supporters gave ideas as well, so a lot of the staff had some kind of influence in the film process
ReplyDeleteI'm a little disappointed about this second film, is not bad but is not better than the first one, I also know this opinion is share it by a few of us...most of the followers were happy with this film, but I believe that the best attitude to improve smth is by the constructive criticism
ReplyDeleteSo, here are a kind of credits summary that I made to help us to see more closely and to compare the differences (as you must know, every outlook gives a different way to create and build a film, therefore is really important the presence of those who made the first film something memorable).
HTTYD 1: - Directed by Deblois and Sanders.
- Executive producers by Kristin Belson and Tim Johnson
- Screenplay by Will Davies, Deblois and Sanders
- Head of the story by Alessandro Carloni (this guy is really talented)
HTTYD 2:
- Directed and written by Deblois... (that was the problem?)
- Executive producers by Deblois and Sanders...(what happened with Kristin and tim?)
- Head of the layout by Gil Zimmerman (this guy is new on this film)
- Head of the story by Tom Owens (what happened with Alessandro??!!!)
Yes,I saw it, and I've been wondering why it wasn't on the home media (where'd youtuber SerimonVideo get all that bonus material from?). I remember that they both came from a storyboarding background before screenplay (example: Mulan). So they were better at figuring a story visually, gathering storyboards and such. That's how they came up with the "Forbidden Friendship" scene, and I just hope they incorporated that process here, especially for the lair scene where Hiccup encounters Valka. DeBlois is obsessed with trying to show how things work (at a convention, he mentioned how he wished he could've explained how the ice cave formed and such), but that was all left behind for time. So with visuals, there's a lot more world, but a script doesn't deliver everything. For me, I had issues with Tuffnut. When he had lines after the dragon race, they just weren't funny. It seemed he was getting slow on the uptake, and the final words were awkward like some bystander we've never seen suddenly got dedicated a four-minute song or something, only faster. I wonder what other lines were improvised and which of them could have made the cut better.

-Tom Owens directed ""Gift of the Night Fury" and won the Annie award for best storyboarding for an animated feature in "HTTYD1" (Alessandro was only nominated?)

-Kristine Belson was producing "The Croods," so she might also be with Sanders for it's sequel.
Just realized that the end of "Meet Drago" is a sympathetic rendition of the "Dragon Battle" theme! This is what happens when you tweak a melody!

We can't measure the success by basing on nominations or awards, in that case social network had a better soundtrack than john powell in 2010... (I don't think so)
ReplyDeleteNow the work of Alessandro was superb, and he wasn't working on the gift of the night, he worked on the main movie,
But my idea was to show the original team (the team work) so we could see this kind of combination of talents, and well you all already know the results...

ReplyDeleteI really appreciate that he listens to us. It's as if we're all a part of his work and, being a writer myself, I can understand how much fun it is. Your manuscript isn't just work on paper and screen; it's living and breathing, and it's a collaborative effort of thousands of people (kind of) all working together to create a story that's worth something. It's not just entertainment, it's life. It's all of our lives.

ReplyDeleteSo you're saying this was drawn by someone who didn't identify themselves as the artist? Perhaps the artist's shadow is reflected on Toothless' eyes. I can see an upper-body figure on there, with proper distance proportion, too. It feels as though that's how much of a human toothless would see from this distance if this were a photograph. The wings seem to have been drawn using vertical pencil lines, the bumps are well shaded for texture, and the artist even included the detail with the top horns being bent asymmetrically (one is lower than the other).

ReplyDeleteSo do we, it's like this Donald Trump factor took it over and switched it to having no more than 3 American items and everything else is Made in China. I don't know how it happened, but they override the anti-monopoly clause dangerously close, and one in a small town literally kills all non-chain businesses. But it did exist here, and killed the sprees till nothing remained but repair shops and chain restaurants. And the dollar stores.
ReplyDeleteBelieve he was setting up the ends more and so the middle came later. It's clear he knows the end, but when one does the middle, it's tricky. There's a setup, there's the finale. Now what? I'm not saying there can't be good part 2s, but setting up the process this way usually stains the way the middle chapter comes out. I don't mind that the 2nd film in a trilogy didn't make better as long as they went somewhere that didn't felt too random and the world-building while keeping the characters intact. But a similar problem happened before in Back to the Future part II. The first film was not intended to have a sequel until it reached unexpected acclaim. From there, the next two film were written as one script and then split into two due to complexities. Both sequels were planned at the same time, but the middle chapter ended up with the least acclaim. It was hip at the time, for sure, and we can laugh and dream from its inaccuracies later, but Zemeckis himself said he felt the film failed because he was never able to give it his full attention. Dean had two films to plan, while both can be good, it is rare for the first film released toe best when the director of both has to plan the next film during production of the current sequel. Star Wars V is often called the best star wars, but remember that and Star Wars VI were not all directed by Lucas, so the jobs of writing and directing two sequel chapters was divided among several people.

ReplyDeleteAn executive producer does have a slight power in adaptations because they decide if the story works for the studio, and budget and schedule the location shove-action films. Take "Holes" for instance. The film follows the book surprisingly closely, but with a major difference: the main character in the books was overweight, and the film version wasn't. This was because the executive producer scheduled the shoots in a way that was not chronological. They knew they couldn't hire a teen to add 10 pounds, lose 15, rebulk and regain every single day, so showing a gradual progression from fat to thin would have been impossible. Though I'm not sure how scheduling works in an animated feature where all the production jobs can be done at once as opposed to one shot at a time.

Um, unless you work for Dreamworks (unlikely, though I suppose not impossible), then we didn't lose. None of us were nominated in any way. You might as well say that Michael Bay lost the Best Director Oscar. In fact, that would make more sense, since as far as I know, Michael Bay was technically eligible (only technically, and I'm pretty sure he knows that as well as anyone) for an Oscar nomination, whereas I'm going to take a punt and you did not do anything last year that would have made you eligible for an Oscar nomination. Neither did I, of course.
