Race to the Edge Interview
Posted on Monday, April 20, 2015 by IcelandicEel
Here's an interview with Art Brown and Douglas Sloan about what kinds of episodes we will see and what we can expect in terms of dragons and characters. These aren't your questions for them, but it's still interesting to hear their perspective on the show!
Spoiler Alert: This interview clip contains no new footage, but it does contains descriptions of scenes and episodes from the show.

Looks exciting!
ReplyDeleteReally cool interview! I think we definitely have some questions we asked already answered though. :P Oh well can't wait to see what others think about the interview, discussion and theories will abound for sure now. :)
ReplyDeleteSo the return of Heather is confirmed. Sounds like she'll have a dragon of her own.
ReplyDeleteSweet! I'm real excited about this! I'm pumped!
ReplyDeleteAlso, his voice is amazing. xD
ReplyDeleteI dont understand english. ¿What episodes wil see in the new series?
ReplyDeleteI had no idea Jay loved to write! That's awesome!
ReplyDeleteI'm really excited to see Heather return and I hope she gets a good story like Doug Sloan said. I can't wait to see how she's grown to look as the rest of the gang has.
Art really loves that candy jar! xD
ReplyDeleteI was thinking that too. Lol.
ReplyDeleteOMG yes. I was just staring at it trying to figure out what type of candy it was π
ReplyDeleteDavid and Tenant is always a minion! LOL
ReplyDeleteWow! I haven't been super excited for Race to the Edge, but after this interview, I can't wait! It sounds like the creators are drawing so much inspiration from both the first and second films, and they just seem so IN to it. This season is going to be awesome!
ReplyDeleteCan't wait for all the "hints", little Easter eggs that bridge the gap between this series and the second film. I'm also excited for Heather's return. It'll be so redeeming to see her rebuild her friendship with the riders and further herself from the mistakes she made when they were younger. Also, that little wrench her presence threw in Hiccup and Astrid's relationship never really did get resolved. I really hope they take advantage of the opportunity to show development in their relationship by bringing her back.
A lesson about impersonation in here. When you have to focus on the voice, you often lose the acting. Zack's voice and humor is not similar to Jonah Hill for Snotlout, but they allowed him to put elements of his own flair to bridge the gap and make it work. And the delivery sells the acting more so than mere sound-alike. Rarely will you find someone who can do both, and if the use of someone with a trademark style cannot return to repeat that success, you have to find a way that works to the medium's advantage without switching off its base origin. Zack gives a different sense of comedy and had to modulate his voice for Snotlout to blend as best he can to what exists, but there's still that boastfulness to his delivery and reaction to pain that is un-disputably belonging to the character. The new voice was thus constructed to become the television Snotlout.
ReplyDeleteThey said something about a storyline involving Dagur and Heather. My theory is Dagur meets Heather after getting out of prison. Since Heather will have a dragon of her own, Dagur will know she has ties to Hiccup. So maybe he will pretend to be this friendly guy to try to get info on Hiccup's whereabouts (since Hiccup's obviously not on Berk) from Heather.
ReplyDeleteI actually missed a few points in the interviews because I was so distracted by him reaching for the candy... whatever was in there must have been good! I'm guessing those were little caramel candies or m&ms.
ReplyDeleteHello
ReplyDeleteI'M SO EXCITED FOR THE SERIES! :)
ReplyDeleteIf I'm honest I might have paused it to try and get a better look. I thought they were jellybeans though I may be biased.
ReplyDelete(for Jellybeans :P )
GUYS GUYS GUYS
ReplyDeleteIts the Snow Wraith! This is how it looks- 100% confirmed :)
IcelandicEel could you put a count down to when book 12 of httyd will come out
ReplyDeleteI really love that Heather is coming back and getting her own storyline, background and development. That is really cool.
ReplyDeleteI just wish Ruffnut and Astrid got the same privilege. They hardly get any valuable screen time and it sounds like they will not be anything but love interests with filler lines on Race to the Edge. I hope I am wrong.. but this is what is looks like to me.
Neither Doug nor Art have mention almost anything about them in any of their interviews so far. They have confirmed that Tuffnut and Fishlegs will lead some episodes when Hiccup takes the backseat and even mentioned things about Snotlout. Astrid and Ruffnut are just... invincible, even a non-movie character is going to be treated as more important then them.
Cool!
ReplyDeleteI wish we could see more clips then just the one.
ReplyDeleteYayy!! :D
ReplyDeleteHeather will returned :D
Windshear? Sounds nice. I wonder what species it will be? I hope for a Scuttleclaw.
ReplyDeleteIs there any word about night furies?
ReplyDeleteI really need to know if there's anything about more night furies.
Yum. Lol
ReplyDeleteThat's actually a really cool idea.
ReplyDeleteAnyone else here before the 1 minute mark that Camicazi is appearing? It's really fast but you can hear it.
ReplyDeleteWait, heather actually has a dragon to? Wait, actually, that doesn't surprise me much. That's really awesome though.
ReplyDeleteI hear it! OMG I'm really excited now! it'll be interesting to see how they put her character in with the dragon riders. I wonder how her and Astrid will act together, lol considering Astrid's based off of her
ReplyDeleteI made a theory tht Heather is Dagur's sister. O-O I'm probably wrong though
ReplyDeleteYes thank you! I was waiting to see if anyone else thought it sounded like he said "Cami interrupts them".(Wasn't sure if I was just hearing stuff or crazy :P) Like I needed more reason to want to watch the show, but I would definitely be interested to see her if this is the case.
ReplyDeleteI can't hear anything about her.
ReplyDeleteYea I heard it. I'm really excited to see if she'll be in there and what they'd do with her character
ReplyDeleteYeah I heard it too. Well, Cami was a popular book character so why not add her.
ReplyDeleteThey were definitely some sort of finger food. ;D
ReplyDeleteHmm. Not sure if he said "Cami" or "comedy." Comedy seems to make more sense in the context of what he is saying. Still, it would be awesome if they introduced her into the movie universe in this show.
ReplyDeleteReally great to see that the people involved in making this show are so in love with the world of HTTYD. Looking forward to seeing what they've been preparing for us!
ReplyDeleteWill we be able to see the answers to the questions we have asked? This is a pre-recorded one.
ReplyDeleteIt looks like a mix between a Woolly Howl and a Shivertooth. And Windshear? Sounds like a good sharp class dragon's name!
ReplyDeleteHiccup Pencil Drawing by my sister! :)
ReplyDeleteHiccup Colored Pencil Drawing by my sister! :)
ReplyDeleteWhat do ya think?
ReplyDeleteAhhh! It looks so cool!!:D
ReplyDeleteI'm fangirling so hard I think I'm about to bust!:D:D:D:D I didn't know Jay loved writing! That's awesome!:D And YESSS HEATHER WILL RETURN!:D So excited right now!!!!:D
ReplyDeleteLol. The producers and those jelly beans though!;'D
It's really good!
ReplyDelete"Comedy" makes the most sense for the context, but it definitely doesn't sound like it. Although that could be the fault of the recording setup not capturing that all important syllable. Or the possibility that he may have just been tired. (Still going to remain optimistically delusional though. XD)
ReplyDeleteSo is Heather coming back or is that a rumor?
ReplyDeletethese guys are genius making good villains good plots and this time around they are going darker and holy crap jay helps out with the plot to even i wonder if he came up with the shield idea
ReplyDeleteand it looks like i didn't need to ask about heather mae whitman is back baby although i still want alvin to
ReplyDeleteThanks it took her a while to finish it.
ReplyDeleteNo. There won't be any more Night Furies. There is a possibility that we will learn more about Toothless' capabilities/powers in this season, though.
ReplyDeleteThis is amazing. I'm really excited and there's only 60 so days left before this releases. They sure did improve on the animation, from the looks of things, and I look forward to seeing how the teens changed throughout the years after the first series/movie and before the sequel.
ReplyDeleteThey explained this fairly well and I look forward to watching the episodes! I hope we can get a short clip or something a month or week before its release.
HEATHER'S COMING BACK???????? Wow
ReplyDeleteProducers say she's coming back
ReplyDeleteI found this!
ReplyDeleteAnd this!
ReplyDeleteWhat kind of dragon is she gonna have?
ReplyDelete"It's not just a shield."
ReplyDeleteIn HTTYD 2, both Fishlegs and Snotlout were all over Ruffnut but in the TV series they don't even show a hint of affection towards her. Fishlegs has never seemed to love anyone except Meatlug so having a crush on Ruffnut seems quite bizarre. Snotlout on the other hand liked Astrid at the beginning and according to the TV show, he never stopped. He is even seen calling Ruffnut a mutton head. It seems very unusual and out of character for each of these people to have found Ruffnut to be a suitable love interest. Why do you think they did this?
ReplyDeleteI used to think no one can impersonate Jay's voice.
ReplyDeleteThen I was proven wrong.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9y_6kcT2vs8
Pretty.
ReplyDeleteI know. I'm so excited for the series!
ReplyDeleteBecause she's the only one their age who isn't engaged. married or with a boyfriend. The other tribes weren't blending just yet, otherwise I think Snotlout would have chased after Heather. Otherwise, there's the dragon factor, and they may have only met peaceful tribes when alliance was necessary, leaving very little room for a relationship...unless they skip dragon training or use the Terrible Terror messengers!
ReplyDeleteNow in history, the Vikings became known for invading lands for expanded territory and blonde women, destroy most of the books in the process. Beowulf may have some references to such an era, being about the Danes and Saxons.
Mother of holy turds that guy's incredible!
ReplyDeleteHonestly, I prefer Zack's performance to Jonah's. I've never been a big fan of his. But I just think Zack's voice and flair fits Snotlout's personality better. It's the same with Ruff, I prefer Andree's style for the character; the only difference is I actually do like Kristen Wigg but I wasn't a fan of the performance in HTTYD 2, something just felt off about it. I guess it's just because I've watched the show so many times that I've gotten used to those voices.
ReplyDeleteit's really good! Waaaayyy better than what I could do xD
ReplyDeleteIncredible! Also makes me curious about what times he's filled in for Jay Baruchel and Christopher Mintz-Plasse in the show.
ReplyDeleteI do like Zack's version. As For Ruffnut, I always felt that she was supposed to feel off. But My problem with Andree is how she seems to put a little too much effort into sounding like Wiig to the point where she isn't breathing. When she has to sing as Ruffnut, she sounds a bit airless and low-toned. I get the impression of a man inexperienced with high voices trying to voice a girl when she sang in "Free Scauldy". I did like her delivery to Barf, "Let loose!" though.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, does anyone think that Fred from BH6 looks too similar to Tuffnut (minus the Rapunzel hair)?
Yeah, but I liked Wigg's version in the first movie... the second one just felt like something was missing. I don't know how to explain it. I read somewhere that that's why Ruff didn't have many lines in the first season, because the first actress didn't sound enough like Wigg; and Ruff had a noticeable increase in screen time in season 2. As for the singing, I always figured that was intentional, a sort of 'vikings take pride in how awful their singing is!' type thing.
ReplyDeleteI agree, Fred looked way too Modern Tuffnut. It was kind of distracting. And TJ voicing both of them didn't help.
I think this new update on school of dragons will have a lot to do with season 3 from what I've seen.
ReplyDeleteTuff/Fred have the round nose, freckles, and the same twisted take on reality. And Ruff was voiced by yet another actor? No wonder I remember her TV voice's name(s) as much as the others!
ReplyDeleteI think the defining line for anyone voicing Ruffnut should be:
"YOU"RE CRAZY!...I like thaaaaat."
(P.S. I think if she said that to Fishlegs, at age 16-17, he would have jumped hastily onto his raft from DotDR, singing "AAGH! I'M A VIKING THROUGH AND THROUGH! I'M A VIKING!" as it capsizes in front of Stoic.)
Wake me up...when September ends.
ReplyDeleteFOOOO JELLYBEANS!
ReplyDeleteI think the issue with Heather was that she didn't show immediate signs of a conflict. She passively goes about Berk learning dragons (A new girl to this lifestyle on Berk and she's immediately this comfortable?) Just when we are about to trust her, she pulls the bedsheets hiding the secret book. I get that she couldn't say who she's working for, but she lingered long enough beforehand to get on Astrid's nerves. She's a bit of a mystery, and even though her goal should have been simple, the culprit saith otherwise upon the tremblers of Alvin's name.
ReplyDeleteI thought of that once, but then I realized that was impossible. Dagur's father is Osvalt the Agreeable, and both of Heather's parents are seen. If Heather and Dagur were siblings, she would most likely already be aquatinted with Berk and its people.
ReplyDeleteBut it would be interesting.
So that's what happened to Freddie Prince Jr. Go figure. They said he's been going under the radar since the millennium.
ReplyDeleteYep, it's the third Thorston "twin" Frednut! (Oh, I couldn't resist!)
ReplyDeleteAnd yes, her name was Julie Marcus.
No, don't think so. Though he does sing Gobber's 'Happy song' in Bing! Bam! Boom!, but he's flying on Meatlug. In the Bonknapper short, he doesn't really do much rowing, the others do all the work while he spits out dragon facts. I didn't see any romantic-ness to that part (though their over-attachment to each other does get pretty silly at times), but it's probably because I'm laughing the entire time at the "And not a Snotlout for miles" line.
I tried to get on that today.
ReplyDeleteOn the home page, logged in. I had to refresh it because apparently something went wrong. Then the tab just closed itself. I then again try to get back on and it said it was still under maintenance.
Ya the app is crashing too.
ReplyDeleteIt's so freakin' bugged up though. I doubt $15 worth of gems is worth an update that creates new bugs when it fixes others. But I guess I can only wait until I pay for the expansion to judge how bad/good this update really is. :/
ReplyDeleteIt's probably Fishlegs' voice that got me think of it, the first Viking-ly thing I could picture a breaking-voiced lad doing. And his voice breaks easily in terror.
ReplyDelete"And not a Snotlout for miles!" (laughs)
Wow.
ReplyDeleteWhat the hell?
ReplyDeleteWhat the-...?
ReplyDeletehttp://www.girlsgogames.com/game/how-to-train-your-dragon-lunch-surprise
I had more fun playing that than I should have.
ReplyDeleteI just remembered that there were trails hidden behind the thickets beyond my backyard. And I'm moving tomorrow. My only dragon is tucked away for the transfer, So I already had no way to recreate Hiccup's first encounter with Toothless. But as the demolition of luck had it set, I had just realized the night too late that I could've gone in and encountered a camouflaged Changewing. Then the Changewing's packs would come in. It would have been such a great test to try to create tension purely from my reaction, camera, and the unseen. Ooh, I missed it! We won't be back long enough to get idle time for me to film it. I never thought I'd find a spot like it. Well, perhaps at a camp, there's way to find a place like it, but I'd have to "get lost in an unmapped pathway" to get there.
ReplyDeleteWell, they've answered most of my questions.
ReplyDeleteI love this guy I was so surprised to hear him do jays voice he's amazing
ReplyDeleteI know, right?
ReplyDelete*sighs dreamily*
ReplyDeleteI love your sister!
ReplyDeleteShe's awesome!
Um, what's with his hand?
ReplyDeleteI love the drawing, I do.
It's just that hand...
My review of SoD:
ReplyDeleteI'm saying right now, I love school of Dragons.
The game is awesome, especially with the new update.
The land within the ice tunnels is beautiful and they are actually paying attention to how your character is. Like, when my character almost got hyperthermia or whatever.
I must, even though the Groncicle is adorable, I find it a bit lazy. It's jut a frozen Gronckle.
Anyway, I'm glad we're introduced to a new character that's not from TV nor movie. He's just for the game. Like that science lady who was replaced by Heather because she looked too much like Valka. Oh! I also like the addition of Mildew.
Overall, It's a beautiful game and the update is amazing.
That's my review of School of Dragons. (Wow I'm doing reviews now)
How.....Jay u have comparison not really
ReplyDeleteLove it! Definetely better than what I could do xD
ReplyDeleteSometimes I'm convinced Ruffnut's voice was a Joan Jett impersonation. Her voice sounds so similar to Joan's vocals in "Bad Reputation". A little shout-out to Shrek.
ReplyDeleteThanks! I'll tell her you said so! :)
ReplyDeleteThe left hand?
ReplyDeleteThey said we will learn out more about Heather's background. Maybe we'll find how she got involved with the Outcasts!
ReplyDeleteice
ReplyDeletei forgot that snotloser flirted with heather better her then astrid cuz she is hiccups lady
ReplyDeleteI think this series will focus in one of its episodes on how Snotlout and Fishlegs fall for Ruffnut. I highly doubt even Snotlout would think there was any chance of him and Astrid getting together anymore anyway. Let's not forget that one episode late in Defenders of Berk how Astrid creeped Snotlout out of flirting with her either. No chance at all the guy is still into her. ;)
ReplyDeleteWhy is he so adorable? Astrid is so lucky!
ReplyDeleteHaha. that would be something! Creative mind my friend
ReplyDeletehttps://youtu.be/4ZEwY4Q0FEM here's another interview
ReplyDeletethey know how big hiccstrid is
ReplyDeleteyeah doug and art did good with that they must of heard about fans wanting her to put him in his place
ReplyDeleteThanks. There is also a second part to this video.
ReplyDeleteWho do you think it is that fishlegs liked other than ruffnut?
ReplyDeleteForming a Mildew Super PAC, Restore Our Past.
ReplyDeleteI want to know more about this "Lichenwing"!
ReplyDeleteOr maybe its that new character
ReplyDeleteBooooo!
ReplyDeleteOk. I know this has nothing to do with dragons but...
ReplyDeleteOMG I"M GONNA LOVE THE NEW X-MEN MOVIE!!
Look how cute Nightcrawler is!
..
ReplyDeleteDAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAMN.
ReplyDeleteI think they said Lycanwing.
ReplyDeleteI hope Heather.
ReplyDeletedoes this mean that the series is before the sequel .?
ReplyDeleteLycan is derived from lycanthrope, Greek for werewolf. So that does make more sense for a plot involving a weredragon and Tuff. :P
ReplyDeleteYes, it is. It's supposed to take place about one year before, I think.
ReplyDeleteTwo actually. They'll be 18 in the 3rd season while in the movie Hiccup's 20.
ReplyDeleteSo Fishlegs has a first human girlfriend in this, and its not who you think (no, it's not Ruffnut)! And Tuffnut gets paranoid for part of the show! Can hardly wait to see the manic twins when they... become more manic. (Were-dragon!)
ReplyDeleteI've heard there's a new female character. I dunno who she is, but It might be her
ReplyDeleteNo, it said 1 year before the sequel
ReplyDeleteReally? O.O
ReplyDeleteCrazy theory: maybe it's Dagur's sister! I heard a rumor she might appear! I would SO love that! π
ReplyDeleteCrazy theory: maybe it's Dagur's sister! I heard a rumor she might appear! I would SO love that! π
ReplyDeleteYea.
ReplyDeleteI know right? Why is he so dang cute?
ReplyDeleteI just noticed this......
ReplyDeleteIn the first picture (from the trailer) her braid is in the back. But in this other promo picture her braid is to the side, but not as long as in the sequel.
I think this is the third season as well, Judging by the buildings in the background and the animation quality.
ReplyDeleteThanks for this =)
ReplyDeleteMaybe Fish falls for a member of the "dragon worshiping" tribe. He could meet another dragon nerd to geek out with.
ReplyDeletemaybe snotloser will find someone to
ReplyDeleteyup
ReplyDeleteStop calling him Snotloser.
ReplyDeleteCan Anyone tell me what Engine they use?
ReplyDeleteSeriously does anyone know??
ReplyDeletei didn'r even notice the braid
ReplyDeleteMe niether
ReplyDeleteMaybe...
ReplyDeleteRuffnut, ruffnut, snotlout, and fishlegs
ReplyDeletehiccstrid is gonna be very good
ReplyDeleteWhy do they kinda look like Disney infinity characters?
ReplyDeleteBecause a tv's budget is smaller than a movie's. XP
ReplyDeleteNice!
ReplyDeleteSo heather is back?
ReplyDeleteLol
ReplyDeleteShort..
ReplyDeleteLol
ReplyDeleteThis is from Big! Bam! Boom!
ReplyDeleteIt was in Defenders of Berk, the second season.
https://youtu.be/Geludqx4Dcg im glad doug and art put free falling in the new seasons i remember the preview clip perfectly they were just falling slightly looking at eachother and hiccup just says hey man i wish i took video footage with my phone it would get fans on here hyped and hiccstrid fans to cuz they ended one clip with astrid taking a blow for hiccup
ReplyDeleteAnswers to some of our questions are up on Rotoscopers!
ReplyDeleteso the skrill wants revenge huh things just got very interesting
ReplyDeleteRevenge on who I wonder
ReplyDeletethe dragon riders
ReplyDeleteDon Don Don.......
ReplyDeleteI also read on one of Rotoscopers other posts that heather will be more or less one of the riders.
we already know that
ReplyDeleteWell I knew that she had her own dragon but they're making it sound like she might become part of the academy or something.
ReplyDeletemaybe
ReplyDeleteThis is what it says on their site
ReplyDelete–Touching back on Heather, Brown says that she becomes a major part of the Dragon Riders in Race to the Edge. This essentially confirms that Heather will join the Riders on their journeys throughout
well since shes good friends with astrid now no fighting will be between them i swear sometimes the hiccup x heather shippers remind me of a certain other pairing i really hate except that certain pairing became canon only on a cop out
ReplyDeleteOMG yes the whole hiccup/heather thing drives me crazy. I kinda hope heather is the one that fishlegs likes so people will stop shipping them. Seriously.
ReplyDeleteOooohhhh did you go to wondercon? I really wanted to go....
ReplyDeletebesides they have been in a relationship its just not as upfront atleast for now
ReplyDeleteYeah
ReplyDeleteyes i did and i remember the hiccstrid moments in the clips
ReplyDeleteAwesome....... About how many clips in all were there?
ReplyDeleteabout 6
ReplyDeleteCool. Now describe every single second in exact detail so I can reanimate it and watch it over and over and over. ππππ lol
ReplyDeletehttp://www.rotoscopers.com/2015/05/15/dragons-race-to-the-edge-possible-snow-wraith-design-doug-sloan-answers-fan-questions/
ReplyDeleteYou know what I find funny and infuriating?
ReplyDeleteIf one dragon has a bad run in with Toothless, they will start attacking any other dragon of that same species without actually asking questions!
I know. But still...
ReplyDeleteNot even the first two seasons looked like that.
Must be just the posters...
Do share, please :3
ReplyDeleteAre you talking about SoD game? (o3o)?
ReplyDeleteWe've already seen what the intro looks like, that gives us a good idea of what they'll look like in the series.
ReplyDeleteSorta like racism >we
ReplyDeletehiccup and toothless find the dragon's eye in a ship the dragon riders face against the snow dragon and deathsong as for hiccstrid hiccup saves astrid from drowning they watch the sunset and astrid takes a blow for hiccup to which i said *ending it with hiccstrid nice*
ReplyDeletehttps://youtu.be/NyNbn5jrsV0 i love hictooth's move
ReplyDeletehttp://nicholasbloom.tumblr.com/post/116162776718/be-safe one of my favorite scenes
ReplyDeleteWhen you went to the WonderCon, did you managed to get the special gift for the early attendees? :D
ReplyDeleteNo.
ReplyDeleteI'm talking about the show.
The most common example; The Whispering Death
nah besides it was just 3 free months of netflix
ReplyDeleteAll the riders
ReplyDeleteIt almost seemed like he wanted to say something else
ReplyDeleteOhhhh that's so awesome. How was the animation quality? I heard its lots better than the first two seasons.
ReplyDeleteYes.
ReplyDeleteHere's Snotlout from Race to the edge!

ReplyDeleteSnotlout from Race to the edge!
